Baby Name Letters by Nakshatra & Pada: A Naming Guide

हिंदी में पढ़ें →

Learn how to find baby name starting letters from birth Nakshatra and Pada, with Hindi sounds, worked examples and checks for birth time and spelling.

How is a baby’s starting letter chosen?

In Nakshatra-based naming, the starting sound comes from the Moon’s birth Nakshatra and its Pada, or quarter. Find both details in the child’s Kundli, look up that combination, then use the suggested sound to build a shortlist of names. The family still chooses the name, its meaning and its spelling.

A Nakshatra alone gives four possible sounds. The Pada selects one of them. For example, a report showing Rohini, Pada 3 leads to वी · Vi in AstroNiva’s table. Selecting Rohini without checking its Pada leaves the choice incomplete.

The Hindi expression नाम का शुरुआती अक्षर is often translated as “name starting letter.” Here it is better understood as a sound or syllable: वी is more specific than the single English letter V.

Find the birth Nakshatra before choosing a name

  1. Open Create your Kundli and enter the child’s birth date, recorded local birth time and birthplace. Select the correct city from the results.
  2. If a name has not been decided, leave the optional name field blank. A personal name is not needed to calculate the Moon’s birth position.
  3. Generate the report and read the birth Nakshatra and Pada in its Overview. Save the Kundli if you want to explore it in other tools.
  4. In the Nakshatra calculator, choose that Kundli to see its birth-star details and four Pada sounds.
  5. Open the baby-name starting-sound tool, choose the same Nakshatra and Pada, and read the suggested sound.

Keep the child’s date, time and place together when checking another report. A date-of-birth label on its own does not establish the correct birth moment in every location. If the recorded time is uncertain, explain that before settling on a result close to a boundary.

Nakshatra, Pada and Rashi: what is the difference?

Three details you may see in a birth report
DetailWhat it describesRole in this naming lookup
Moon RashiThe zodiac sign occupied by the Moon at birthUseful chart context; it does not select a Pada sound by itself
Birth NakshatraOne of 27 equal sections of the sidereal zodiacSelects the four-sound row
Pada / CharanOne of four quarters within that NakshatraSelects the sound in that row

The equal-section system covers 360 degrees with 27 Nakshatras: each spans 13°20′. Dividing it into four gives 3°20′ per Pada. This is why two children can share a Nakshatra but have different Padas and different suggested initials.

The Moon Rashi is also different from the Sun sign and Lagna. If those labels are confusing, read the Sun, Moon and rising sign comparison before comparing charts.

Example Nakshatra and Pada starting sounds

These four example rows use the same Hindi sounds and English pronunciation labels as AstroNiva’s naming tool. Read across to the Pada in your report.

For another Nakshatra, use the complete 27-Nakshatra naming lookup. Its 27 rows and four Padas cover 108 combinations. These combinations suggest starting sounds; they are not a list of 108 complete baby names.

Two examples: choose the Pada, then the sound

Example 1: Rohini, Pada 3

Suppose the child’s report says Rohini, Pada 3. Find Rohini in the table and read its third column: वी · Vi. Pada 2 in the same row would give वा · Va instead. Using a different column changes the lookup even though the Nakshatra name stays the same.

Example 2: Revati, Pada 4

For a report showing Revati, Pada 4, select Revati and 4 in the tool. The result is ची · Chi. Do not choose Pada 1 simply because it is the first option; Pada 1 gives दे · De, a different sound.

Both examples start with an assumed report result so you can practise reading the table. To find a child’s actual Nakshatra and Pada, start with that child’s birth details and Kundli.

Why another website may show a different initial

First compare the Nakshatra and Pada, not just the final English letters. If the chart details disagree, check the birth date, local time, city, time zone and ayanamsa used. Near a Nakshatra or Pada boundary, a difference in the birth moment or chart settings can change which section contains the Moon.

If both reports show the same Nakshatra and Pada, compare the written sound. AstroNiva writes वी as Vi; another table may write Vee. The different Roman spelling can describe the same Hindi syllable. The single letter V does not convey all of that pronunciation information.

Regional languages and family naming traditions may represent some sounds differently. Keep a copy of the Hindi sound and the report’s Pada when asking your family or astrologer about an unfamiliar pronunciation. Avoid changing the chart details just to obtain a preferred initial.

Turn the suggested sound into a name shortlist

  • Write down the sound and a few names that begin with it in the language you intend to use.
  • Check the meaning and pronunciation with a reliable language reference or someone who knows that language.
  • Say each full name aloud with the surname and consider how family members will pronounce it.
  • Compare the spellings you prefer rather than assuming one Roman transliteration is the only option.
  • If your family uses separate ceremonial and everyday names, discuss how it wants to use the suggested sound.

Name numerology is a separate calculation. The name-number calculator adds the letters of a spelling you enter; the Nakshatra naming tool looks up a sound from the birth chart. A different surname can change a name-number total without changing the birth Nakshatra or Pada.

Common questions about baby naming

Can I create the Kundli before naming the baby?

Yes. The name field in AstroNiva’s Kundli form is optional. Enter the correct birth details, then use the birth Nakshatra and Pada from the report.

Should I use today’s Panchang Nakshatra?

Use the Nakshatra at the child’s birth moment. Today’s Panchang describes the selected day and location, so it may not match the birth report.

Does the sound change for a boy or a girl?

AstroNiva’s sound lookup uses only the Nakshatra and Pada. It has no gender setting. You can use the result when considering any name that fits your family’s preferences.

What if the birth time is unknown?

Keep the uncertainty visible when discussing the chart. Do not pick a random Pada or enter an assumed time and treat it as recorded. Ask whether the possible time range crosses a boundary before choosing a sound from it.

Does AstroNiva provide a complete list of names and meanings?

The starting-sound tool provides the traditional sound for the selected combination. It does not generate a name database or verify the meanings of complete names. For help interpreting the child’s chart or discussing family preferences, ask our astrologer about naming.
