Sun Sign, Moon Sign & Rising Sign: What Is Different?
Understand Surya Rashi, Chandra Rashi and Lagna, why Vedic and Western signs can differ, and which birth details you need to check each one.

Three signs, three different chart factors
Your Sun sign, Moon sign and rising sign describe different positions in a birth chart. They do not need to match. In a Vedic Kundli, you will commonly see them labelled Surya Rashi, Chandra Rashi and Lagna.
| Sign | Vedic label | What is being located? |
|---|---|---|
| Sun sign | Surya Rashi | The Sun’s zodiac position |
| Moon sign | Chandra Rashi / Janma Rashi | The Moon’s zodiac position |
| Rising sign | Lagna / Ascendant | The zodiac rising on the eastern horizon at birth |
In traditional interpretation, the Sun is often discussed with identity and direction, the Moon with emotional habits, and the Ascendant with the starting point of the houses and a person’s approach to life. These are distinct lenses on one chart, rather than three competing answers.
Why a Vedic Sun sign can differ from a Western sign
AstroNiva’s chart tools read the sidereal Vedic positions in your selected Kundli. Many Western birthday horoscopes use the tropical zodiac. These reference systems do not place every sign boundary at the same position, so a person’s Sun-sign label can differ.
A month-and-day zodiac list is therefore not a fair check of a calculated Vedic Sun sign. Compare the zodiac system, ayanamsa, birth details and actual planetary degree. Ayanamsa is the offset used when relating tropical and sidereal longitudes; different settings can matter near a boundary.
Which birth details matter?
Use your date, recorded birth time and birthplace to generate the Kundli. Birthplace helps identify the location and time zone; the time zone converts the recorded local time into the correct birth moment.
The Ascendant depends particularly on the moment and location. A rough statement that it changes “every two hours” should not be treated as an exact timetable for every location. The Moon and Sun can also be close to sign boundaries, where a time or calculation-setting difference becomes important.
If your birth time is unknown, do not quietly enter noon and treat the resulting Lagna as confirmed. Tell the astrologer what is known and what is estimated before discussing the Ascendant or house-based interpretation.
How to check all three signs on AstroNiva
- Create your Kundli with the correct date, time and selected birthplace, or open a chart already saved on this device.
- Open the Sun Sign calculator and choose that Kundli to read its Vedic sidereal Sun sign.
- Use the same chart in the Rashi calculator for Chandra Rashi.
- Open the Rising Sign calculator to read Lagna and the Ascendant degree.
Using one chart for all three tools keeps the birth details and original calculation settings consistent. Saved charts are stored on the device where you saved them; signing in alone does not copy that local chart library to another phone or computer.
Is Nakshatra the same as Moon Rashi?
No. A Moon Rashi divides the zodiac into twelve signs, while the usual birth-Nakshatra system divides it into 27 sections, each with four Padas. Both refer to the birth Moon’s position, but they divide that position differently.
Use the Nakshatra calculator for the birth star and Pada. The baby-name starting-sound tool uses those two details; it does not choose a naming sound from the Sun sign.
What to compare when two websites disagree
- Are both showing the Sun, both the Moon, or both the Ascendant?
- Are both using sidereal positions, or is one using tropical positions?
- Do the birth time, time zone and selected city match?
- Are the ayanamsa settings the same?
- Is the position close to a sign boundary?
Keep the original birth details and both reports ready when requesting a personal Kundli explanation. The degree and calculation settings are more useful for resolving a difference than the sign name on its own.
