Mulank vs Bhagyank: Calculate Both with Examples
Mulank uses your birth day; Bhagyank uses your full date of birth. Follow checked examples, avoid common mistakes and find the right AstroNiva calculator.
The difference in one example
Mulank uses the day of the month you were born. Bhagyank uses every digit in your full date of birth. “Moolank” is another English spelling of मूलांक; “Bhagyank” is भाग्यांक.
For the illustrative date 17 May 1990, Mulank is 1 + 7 = 8. Bhagyank is 1 + 7 + 0 + 5 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 32, then 3 + 2 = 5. The same birth date therefore gives two different numbers because the inputs are different.

How to calculate Mulank
- Take only the day: for example, 29.
- Add the digits: 2 + 9 = 11.
- Keep reducing to one digit: 1 + 1 = 2.
Under this rule, birthdays on the 2nd, 11th, 20th and 29th all have Mulank 2. The month and year do not enter this calculation. For the 28th, the reduction is 2 + 8 = 10 → 1.

How to calculate Bhagyank
- Write the full date, including all four digits of the year.
- Add every digit from the day, month and year.
- Reduce the total to a single digit from 1 to 9.
For the illustrative date 29 November 1992, the sum is 2 + 9 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 34 → 7. Its Mulank is 2 while its Bhagyank is 7. The zero in a month such as 05 contributes zero and does not change the sum.
AstroNiva calls this date-based tool Destiny Number / Bhagyank. Some other traditions use “Destiny Number” for a name calculation instead. Check whether the tool asks for a name or a birth date before comparing the numbers.
Why another report might keep 11, 22 or 33
The Mulank and date-based Bhagyank tools reduce to 1–9. The separate detailed numerology report can retain master numbers in its Pythagorean calculations. When two tools show 22 and 4, compare their stated reduction rules rather than assuming the arithmetic is wrong.
Birth-date and name-number methods are separate choices. A Chaldean name chart cannot change a Mulank calculated from the day you were born. Similarly, a different surname changes name-letter totals but does not alter your birth date.
Common input mistakes
- Adding the month and year when trying to find Mulank.
- Using only the last two digits of the year for Bhagyank.
- Swapping the day and month in a date field.
- Comparing a master-number report with a tool that always reduces to 1–9.
- Comparing a name-based Destiny Number with a date-based Bhagyank.
No birth time or birthplace is needed for these two calculations. Those details are needed for different tasks, such as identifying the Ascendant in a Kundli.
How to read the two numbers together
Numerology traditions attach different themes to a birth-day number and a full-date number. First verify both calculations, then read the two profiles separately. People sharing the same birthday number can have different full-date numbers.
A Lo Shu grid is another way to display the digits in the birth date. Its repeated or missing cells do not change the arithmetic of Mulank or Bhagyank.
Does a name change affect either number?
No. If the birth date stays the same, its Mulank and Bhagyank stay the same. A name change can affect a name-number calculation.
